My husband and I wanted a surprise gender reveal.

When we visited our doctor, we asked him to write the gender on the sonogram and seal it in an envelope. We gave the envelope to our friend Lucy, who helped coordinate the surprise with my sister. Since we are currently living in a pandemic, we wanted to ensure that we social distanced and have separate gender reveals – one with just our close friends and another one with our families. Little did we know, Lucy had other ideas.

A small group of about five people showed up for our gender reveal. They started the event with a scavenger hunt inside the house. So, we stepped outside for a few minutes while they left the clues scattered throughout our house. As we searched, attached to each clue was a unique puzzle piece. Once we completed the puzzle, it had a message from our baby!

“I am very small, but very important.
I am free, but very expensive.
You’re going to see me soon.
But you can’t see me now.
What am I?”

Somehow, during our scavenger hunt, a dozen cupcakes were brought out and there was “one” cupcake that had the baby gender in icing (pink or blue). But that was too easy. Since our friends are pranksters, we soon learned that there was no gender revealing icing – all the cupcakes were normal. It turns out that our friends were just stalling so they could prepare for an even larger surprise.

After enjoying the cupcakes, my husband and I were told to head outside. There, we would find out the gender of our baby. When we walked outside, we surprised to see  many of our friends and family in their cars and a sign that said, “Boy or Girl?”…Then, Lucy brought out a beautiful cake and we cut it, finally revealing the gender of our baby.

It was a boy!
